Operations Manager – Civil & Mining Contractor
  
Our client is a growing contractor who specialise in the delivery of civil construction and mining services to tier one miners throughout the Pilbara region. With an inhouse fleet of over 100 pieces of plant and equipment, along with business units located in Perth and throughout the wider Pilbara region, the business is well placed to continue their growth.
 
They are seeking an Operations Manager to lead their business unit in Karratha. This is a residential role leading a permanent team of employees numbering circa 40 individuals including Project Managers and trades, whilst overseeing the delivery of civil construction and mining service projects for Rio Tinto and other clients operating in WA’s mining and resources sector.
 
Our client is keen to speak to candidates with prior experience working in senior management positions for civil and mining contractors. With a strong working knowledge of projects involving bulk earthworks, structural concrete works, plumbing and waste management.
 
Duties
  • Business growth in conjunction with General Manager and Project Managers.
  • Oversee daily operations and makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Executing on the business growth plan while achieving P & L objectives.
  • Leading Project Planning meetings and Operations meetings.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel.
  • Creating a positive and motivating atmosphere in the company and providing better growth opportunities for the employees.
  • Participate in establishing practices, templates, policies, tools and partnerships to expand and mature capabilities for the organization.
  • Development and monitoring of business and personal KPI’s based on Business and Strategic Plans.
  • In-depth knowledge of the business with the ability to promote the company’s products and services addressing client’s needs and objectives.
  • Obtain and exceed yearly departmental sales and client KPI’s.
  • Establish and maintain effective formal and informal links with major customers, relevant government departments and agencies, key-decision makers and other stakeholders.
  • Act as an internal quality control check for all projects.
  • Manage ongoing quality control and participate in quality issue resolution.
  • Assist in dispute, negotiation, arbitration or litigation, as needed.
  • Coach, assist, mentor and guide individual employees as required.
  • Resolve conflicts promptly, provide constructive feedback and create development plans if necessary for individual employees.
  • Work with the HR department to determine position selection criteria, participate and conduct job interviews and reference checks.
  • Conduct probation and annual performance reviews including providing feedback both positive and constructive to employees and assisting with creation of development plans in alignment with employee and company goals.
 
Criteria
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a similar / senior management role.
  • Tertiary qualification in relevant field.
  • Trade qualification in construction or relevant practical experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite and MS Project
  • Proficiency in Project Management Software
  • Understanding for tenders, contracts and operations
  • Australian main contractor experience.
  • Experience working on civil and mining projects in WA’s mining and resources sector (ideally Rio Tinto experience).
