The future of the architecture and design sector

Back to Blogs

The architecture, interior design, landscape design, and urban design sector remains buoyant across Australia - despite disruptions and a constantly changing world.

Candidate appetite is at an all time high, with great remuneration packages on offer for top tier talent.

For CGC Recruitment, these 4 sectors were a natural addition to our comprehensive and specialised offering - with the intention to service and support the complete construction life cycle for our clients and candidates.

With a solid background of engaging with builders and project managers across the construction space, CGC Recruitment can support our clients through our extensive front end knowledge and expertise.  More notably, it’s our profound understanding of the synergies and subtleties of architectural and interior design practices, which is vastly different to the rest of the industry.

We share our predictions of what the future looks like for candidates in the architecture and design sectors.

Culture and design ethos a deciding factor for candidates

Gone are the days when interior designers focused on only achieving aesthetically pleasing spaces.  It’s becoming clear the pandemic has brought renewed focus on function and flexibility as designers navigate the new normal. And along with the new emerging trends, candidate expectations have also changed.

Managing Director of CGC Recruitment, Nick Curtisexplains, “Our design candidates are proud of their portfolios and their body of work.  We understand they’re not driven purely by financial motivations - they’re after an employer who embodies a similar design ethos, and ultimately, it’s about theworkplace culture.”

The clients who are enjoying the most success when recruiting are those who have the best reputation for culture and design quality. Candidates are now taking a more proactive approach and seeking companies who don’t necessarily have iconic projects, but encompass an alignment of similar values and philosophies.

What does the future hold for architects and designers?

Architecture and design activity is generally tied to the economy and market cycles. For example, within the landscape design space, works are associated with infrastructure projects, particularly in the metro area.

And while Australia’s commercial and residential building markets are recovering, this has also driven increased demand for architectural services as well as interior designers.  There has been significant investment in the following areas:

  • major road and rail projects

  • urban renewal around major transport hubs

  • high end residential

  • destination venues

  • refurbishments and fitouts of offices and commercial buildings

With our government’s massive push for development, growth, and recovery, we can expect continued fast tracking of construction projects - providing a decent pipeline of work for our candidates over the next two or three years.

How CGC is supporting gender diversity

While we have witnessed significant improvements within the infrastructure, engineering, and construction sectors – there’s still a lack of women in these professions.

On the other hand, the female participation within the architecture interior space is significantly higher than the construction sector.  CGC Recruitment celebrates our female architects and designers who are at the forefront.

To continue to champion diversity, CGC has supportedWIDAC(Women in Design and Construction) since it launched in 2017.  This program encourages businesses to improve diversity both on and off-site, and advocates the change of the infrastructure, engineering, and construction sectors as a male-dominated environment.
