CGC Recruitment is excited to announce Urbnsurf's first expansion site at Sydney Olympic Park is now officially on the way.
Announced late last year, Urbnsurf Sydney aims to be the city’s first and leading surf centre, catering for beginners to budding professional surfers.
Spanning an extensive 3.6 hectare area, the venue boasts premium amenities such as restaurants, a rooftop bar, a family-friendly leisure pool, skate park, surf academy, beach cabanas, a yoga studio, a surf shop, hot tubs, and kids’ playground. Similar to its Melbourne predecessor, the venue will also host clinics and lessons, with the pool accommodating night surfing thanks to LED lighting.
It’s anticipated Urbnsurf Sydney will support over 300 jobs during construction and another 50 full time positions once the park is operational.
Construction of the $50 million development project is expected to start in Q3 of 2021, with the centre due to open to the public in Summer 2022.
Melbourne’s Urbnsurf presents an innovative concept of artificial and consistently perfect waves. The consistency and adjustability of surfing conditions achieved simply can't be matched in nature. For someone who is looking to either learn or perfect the fundamentals of surfing, the advantages of the surf park are unquestionably superior.
Urbnsurf's first location launched in early 2020 outside Tullamarine airport in Melbourne. It’s been hailed as an unmitigated success, despite facing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the venue to close twice before re-opening in October. The venue generated over 100,000 visitors throughout the year and enjoyed a successful summer.
The wave pool was built on a 5.4 hectare site and the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. It cost around $40 million to build. The park is powered by renewable energy sources and is currently the largest recycled concrete structure in the country, made up of concrete from demolished airport runways.
Ubrnsurf Sydney is primed for similar success - perhaps even more - due to the city typically experiencing warmer weather throughout the year.
Chief Executive of Urbnsurf Damon Tudor explained, “We are thrilled to continue bringing to life Urbnsurf’s vision of providing a safe and inclusive way to surf in Australia where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can get stoked riding perfect, authentic surfing waves in a safe and controlled environment.”
The new $50 million facility at Sydney Olympic Park kicks off in July and promises to deliver a new wave of jobs for the construction industry. The park’s economic benefits will be a welcomed respite - attracting more visitors to the region and fostering employment opportunities for a stronger economy.
Construction features include:
Diamond-shaped lagoon (similar in size to the SCG) pumping ocean-like waves up to two metres in height
A high end licensed cafe, rooftop bar, and beach club
A fully equipped surf rental and shop
Surf Academy delivering training programs for all levels of surfing
Event and function spaces
Premium amenities for visitors which include beach cabanas, skate ramps, lagoonside pools, and kids’ playground
Park designer Clarke Hopkins Clarke extended their initial project design to incorporate additional elements to further enhance the surf culture:
Fitness retreat
Multi-purpose space for events and co-working spaces
The facility will also feature sustainable design elements, renewable energy, and water saving systems, to keep with Sydney Olympic Park’s strong environmental sustainability ethos.
With construction and commissioning of the facility taking around 18 months to complete, we expect to see demand in the following areas:
Site managers
Contracts administrators
Foreman
Project managers
As surfing will officially debut as an Olympic sport this year in Tokyo, Australia is tipped to see a surge in the development of surf parks and artificial waves.
Urbnsurf is already planning additional surf parks in Perth and Brisbane - who indeed, will also appreciate a quintessential destination for surfers and non-surfers alike.
